Every human has four endowments- self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom… The power to choose, to respond, to change. -Stephen Covey
Stephen Covey is one of my favorite authors. He gave us The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I would easily place this in my top 10 books of all time. I realize many professional philosophers, and big thinkers would be horrified at such a suggestion. This work, however, is different from many others in the self-help category, and it is simpler to read and then to put into practice than many of the great books.
The above quote captures a key truth that is the foundation of the habits offered up by Covey. This bit of wisdom is also central in the teachings of Jesus. They both offer the insight that while we may not always be free to choose our circumstances in life, we are, by our very nature free to choose our responses.
Covey passed away on Monday, July 16, in a hospital in Idaho from complications following a bicycle accident. He was 79.
