About a month ago I was at a meeting for deacons of the Archdiocese of Toronto hosted by Archbishop Thomas Collins. The primary purpose for the gathering was to discuss the new guidelines which were to be announced regarding the process for handling allegations and cases of sexual abuse by the clergy in the Archdiocese. (Click here to read the Archbishop’s message from this past spring).

While I was impressed by the revised procedures what really struck me was His Grace’s comments after a question. The question and the answer are not important. What struck me was the passionate tone of the Archbishop as the leader of our community, his obvious love of the Church and his understanding that we had failed, with tragic implications, in dealing with this crisis.

Pope Benedict said in the spring that “the church needs to profoundly relearn penitence, accept purification, learn forgiveness but also justice”.

In this video Fr. Robert Barron tackles this question and ties it to the Prophet Ezekiel. Take a few moments and listen as he helps us to understand where we are as a Church and that the way forward may well be to understand how the old testament is relevant to us today.
