I remember giving a presentation a while back and at the break, a person came up to me and asked why I seemed to use only abstract or “iconic” (if that is the right word) pictures of Christ.
In all honesty, this was a subconscious choice on my part. The more I thought about it the more I came to realize that I am not a fan of most religious art. While there is no doubting the beauty of many of the masterpieces, they just do not seem to capture the essence of Jesus and his mission, for me at least.
Icons are another story. This might be because each tells a story. I do not profess any real understanding of iconography (again I hope that is a proper use of the word), but I do admire those who have the patience and the talent to tell our Christian story in this way. I have a friend Ria, who has just such a talent.
Here is a video I found over at Amused, and it is a five-minute creation story for an icon called the Face of God.
