This week we started our new season of meetings for our local St. Patrick’s Friends of Dismas group. Each month we gather and reflect on our call to minister to people touched by crime.

This year we will be exploring what it means to live a life of compassion one of the great virtues. Each of our meetings starts with a Lectio Divina based on a scripture passage, a sharing on the passage and then a look into the topic of the night.

Below is talked called Reconnecting with Compassion: by Krista Tippett on TED.com . This is part of a series of talks we will be looking at in the weeks ahead and was given as part of the work Karen Armstrong is doing on a project called the Charter for Compassion.

A good place to start any discussion is at the beginning and a good beginning is a strong definition of the topic. Krista Tippett is journalist and the host of the American Public Media show On Being and in this segment she explores how the term “compassion” — typically reserved for the saintly or the sappy — has fallen out of touch with reality. At this special TEDPrize@UN, Krista  deconstructs the meaning of compassion through several moving stories, and proposes a new, more attainable definition for the word.
