Luke 23: 39-43

Now one of the criminals hanging there shouted at Jesus, saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us.” The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, “Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.“

Dismas Reflection:

We had been up there for a few hours now.  As I looked down, I could see those who followed Jesus.  I even saw the religious leaders there, they were still mocking him, even Gestas.  I asked Gestas why he didn’t fear God.  I told him we deserved our punishment, but that Jesus was an innocent man.

At that very moment I believed that Jesus was the Son of God.  I can’t explain it, but I believed it.  I turned to look at  Him and asked, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom”.  He looked over at me with eyes wide open and a love I cannot explain and said “My friend, today you will be with me in paradise.”

In the middle of all this suffering I had hope for the first time- I believed that paradise awaited me just as Jesus had promised.

Reflection Question:

Jesus, I’ve always been disappointed in deals ‘to good to be true’.  Is believing in you enough to be saved?

With St. Dismas we pray:

Dear God, grant me a heart and mind working as one, believing in your promise of everlasting life which is realized through faith in your son Jesus.
