But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered. Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull.
My buddy Gestas thought the sight of Jesus’ bloody body from the whipping was pretty funny. He started to call him all sorts of names. I could not believe it when they made Jesus pick up his entire cross and carry it. We only carried the top portion but the guards really have it in for Jesus. Their cruelty knew no end. God, if I only had one more chance, I’d do things differently. As I looked at Jesus all ripped and bloody, I felt shame for some reason. Maybe because I knew he was an innocent man. It was like he was carrying the sins of all us on his back with that heavy cross.
Jesus, I’ve experienced hardship all of all my life and I have caused it as well. Tell me am I bound by it, or is there a better way?
With St. Dismas we pray:
Dear God, help me to see and understand the pain in my life, and give me the strength to make sure that my actions do not cause hardship and hurt to others.
