In my homily on the love letter from St. Paul, I mentioned a BBQ sauce recipe contained in a 50+ year old letter from Val to her sister Pearl. I promised to post the recipe so here it is for your dinning enjoyment.

One interesting thing about how letters and things can change. I have included the exact recipe as contained in the letter. I really have no idea how it will taste. When I showed this to someone more familiar with cooking than I am they suggested reducing the amount of lemon juice.

What we have in the New Testament are not exact copies of what Paul wrote to the various communities he had established. Many scholars believe that there are parts of the letters, and in some cases complete letters, that others may have added or changed to fit the needs of the community.

I will let you be the judge on the lemon juice.

4 lbs (that’s pounds for you metric folks) spareribs
1 medium sized onion
2 tbsp salad oil (perhaps we call that olive oil now?)
½  cup lemon juice
2 tbsp vinegar
1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
4 tbsp Brown sugar (or more)
½ cup water
1 cup chili Sauce
Salt & Peper

Cut the spareribs into serving portions. Brown in oven for 30 minutes. Brown chopped onion in oil. Add rest of the ingredients and cook slowly for 20 minutes, Pour over the spareribs and bake in oven for one hour.
